7 Easy Steps To Pack Your Dishes For Moving House

 It doesn't matter whether you bought your dishes on clearance or received them as a wedding gift, the last thing you want is to empty them and find a broken one. If you are single and have never cooked for anyone, it probably isn't a big deal, but if you have a family or do a lot of delight, one missing dish usually translates into a need for a new set. 1. Packing supplies- You will need several medium-sized packing boxes. You can buy new boxes, or you can fill them with used boxes. Just keep in mind that if you pack used boxes, make sure they are sturdy, not overused and can hold the weight of what you are packing. You will also need wrapping paper or newsprint, wrapping tape, and a tag to label the box. Note that if you are using a newsprint or newspaper to wrap it, you will have to wash the dishes thoroughly after emptying them to remove any remaining ink. 2. Preparation- You should also strengthen the bottom with packing tape, whether you're packing a used box or a new one. Attach a few layers of tape and then test the bottom by pressing your hand on it. Take the newsprint or packaging paper and ball up several sheets into wads of paper. You will use this to line the box's bottom and top. Select a medium-size box that you have reinforced and added the wadded paper to make sure the bottom is sealed. You may use bubble wrap as well, but it is costly and hard to recycle bubble wrap.

3. Stack Vertically- When packing dishes for the move, most people roll each plate and place it in the box horizontally. After all, this is the way they sit stacked in your cupboard, so it looks like it's convenient to move them the same way. Well, what you might not realize is that every bump in the way will cause the plates to bounce. Even if wrapped in paper, all that constant movement makes it completely vulnerable. The best way to package them is to wrap each plate and then stack them vertically in a box. Make sure to fill in excess space with socks, towels, or any other soft material to keep it safe.

4. Box up the dishes- Place the two plates in the box on either side. Dishes should never be packed flat as this may cause them to break. If the box encounters any force, the panels at its edge can withstand much more pressure than if they were placed flat on the bottom of the box.

5. Keep Wrapping and stacking- Place linen or towels on top of the dishes if there is space left in the package, or use more balled up wads of paper to fill the gaps before sealing the package. With sturdy packing tape, protect the closed box. Label the box as fragile, list the things and their place on the outside, such as "kitchen" or "dining room."

Instead of using newspaper (which does not provide adequate protection anyway) or bubble wrap (which is a waste and expensive), why not use towels, shirts, and rags as the packaging material?
